The course material describes various repair methods of arresting crack growth. Many web-gap cracks are blindly repaired/retrofitted with the hole drilling method. The course material suggests bolting procedures and welding procedures. Work plans and procedures for web gap softening to repair cracks are explained in this course. The course material is based on the Manual for Repair and Retrofit of Fatigue Cracks in Steel Bridges, Publication Number FHWA-13-IF-020.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will have a better understanding about the guidelines to repair and retrofit fatigue cracks in steel as well as an understanding of the following topics: 

• Out-of-plane distortion
• Out-of-plane distortion repair methods
• The girder/floor beam connections
• Cantilever bracket cracking
• Prototype verification of secondary stress repair
